Borders
Borders
Allured by the opportunity for big discounts on books, I just applied for a part-time position at Borders. It's kind of funny that my first job as a college grad could be as a bookseller. Oh well, it should be good for my egotistical pretensions.
literature
just finished reading lolita, did it (1) as a sort of precursor to reading 'reading lolita in tehran' (trite. i know and i don't care.) (2) as an introduction to nabokov, whom i had meant to read for some time now.
well, it's a weird book. beautifully written, but tragic and haunting subject matter. i'm still trying to wrap my mind around its different layers, but at the same time i feel like i'm kidding myself in my amateur attempt to analyze a book that devout english majors and international literati drool over. i didn't even understand the french! there was an annotated version that was also available when i bought my insight-free copy, but it was a dollar more expensive and I had a moment of academic hubris.
i'm thinking that it'll sink in better after a few more novels. it's definitely churning away at the back of my mind, much more than anything have read since 'the stranger'
drinking beer, wearing cowboy hats, watching a rodeo
partying in calgary, drunk pictures with cowboys sauntering through downtown
partying in calgary, with ed at a crazy 8000 person pub crawl that started at noon
backpacking again, me on top of pulsatilla pass
backpacking, me at mystic lake
backpacking with mike in Banff. i haven't taken the time yet to crop the dude's finger out of the photo
i love my roommates so much
graduating... i got to wear the cool leis. thanks mom and dad
another BRYE picture. that is my tutee, hanh, on my left. she's really cool.
i'm going out of chronological order now because i missed something important (and proof that i didn't spend the entire time drinking): this is a picture from the final BRYE field trip. we went bowling, i was terrible.
drinking with roommates and families, i was severely underdressed (oh well)
taking hits of jaegermeister before going out - a terrible, terrible idea
really hungover at a champagne brunch for freshman year dormmates
partying with the hawaiians - didn't know that a vein pops out in the middle of my forehead when i'm suffocating
more partying
and one more
and another
another
the next few pictures are all from the sake night, i can't seem to figure out how to do them all at once
hmmm, i guess i still haven't worked my way through the basics of this picture posting process
some pictures with friends and of friends from a late semester night of belligerent sake bombing
this is another picture from nationals - taken of the entire team after a second day victory over the University of British Columbia
This is a picture of the old people on the frisbee team that we took in corvallis, at the national championships... it was an amazingly fun time
onto the rest of my life
life got pretty fast-paced for a while. I spent the last month of college basically partying every night (or playing ultimate)... then I travelled in the month following graduation: washington dc, calgary, a week in the canadian rockies.
but i'm finally home now and can't bring myself to avoid this stupid blog any longer. but in my post graduation malaise i'm choosing once again to let the photos i post do most of the talking for me.
i'm currently applying for jobs in indonesia and at home. the jobs at home are simply to find something to keep me occupied and bankroll my vices until i get abroad. hopefully it'll happen in about a month. we'll see, job searching is a bitch.
i just started reading lolita, it looks really good so far. i pulled the trite move of buying 'lolita' and 'reading lolita in tehran' from borders yesterday. i couldn't help myself. i saw 'reading lolita in tehran' on the shelf in front of me and desperately wanted to read it, but knew i had to do the requisite background work first.
oh, and i've made my parents watch a couple of wong kar wai films this past week... now they think i have terrible taste in movies. oh well, i know it's the trend-following hipster-wanna-be nerd that drives my love for these movies, and i'm fine with that for the moment.
ok, that's all for now... a glut of pictures will follow when i get my act together.
